E-Newsletter Issue 97
|E-Newsletter Issue 97: Thursday 8th June 2017|
I will, very soon, be in a position to share the staffing structure and teaching arrangements for the 2017-18 academic year. The recruitment process is ongoing - candidates have visited the school, applications will be vetted and interviews will take place imminently. As soon as I have news, I will share it with you.
Phonics Screening Check
Year 1 pupils will have their statutory Phonics Screening Check over the course of next week. This short, 1:1 assessment only takes a few minutes and follows the daily phonics work that children will already be well accustomed to.
Following recent events in Manchester and London, school staff have working hard to strike the right balance between engaging in discussions with curious and concerned children and protecting their young minds from the details that we see and hear in the daily news. From my discussions with parents, it appears that some would prefer to address this subject at home, others not at all. Many, particularly older pupils, have watched the news and even more saw the One Love concert at the weekend. Where appropriate, there have been incredibly powerful discussions in school this week and our Year 5/6 pupils channelled this into creating 'Willow's Wishes' for a better world - the posters give a very defiant and positive vision.
Year 6 residential
At the time of writing this, the forecast for next week is looking quite promising. Having said that, please ensure that your child is fully equipped for a full range of weather conditions. The webcam at Perranporth is a good place to look to see how changeable and windswept the beach can be!

Hot meal bookings
I have a huge favour to ask concerning hot meals.
Gone are the days where school kitchens have cupboards bursting with food stuffed full of preservatives and long sell by dates. All food is brought in fresh, with orders placed on a Wednesday for delivery in time for the following week's meals. To save on cost and food wastage, Dawn our wonderful cook, orders the correct amount of food (plus a very small extra contingency) for those meals that are ordered by Tuesday.
However, the pattern of late hot meal ordering is moving to the point where more and more meals are being booked during the morning of the same day that the meal is needed. In other words, Dawn will already be cooking the pre ordered meals for the day when new meal bookings arrive on our system. This can be particularly difficult when Dawn is cooking things like burgers, when 47 burgers suddenly have to be divided by 58 children - it doesn't work. On one day this week, 7 pupils had no packed lunch and no hot meal booked. As Dawn is extremely conscientious, she has always managed to accommodate one or two late orders but she is fnding the increasing demand from late orders to be impossible to manage.
Please help us to resolve this situation. We will obviously never see a child go hungry and the last thing you want to be doing is bringing in a packed lunch from home or work but, equally, there have been a few occasions where we have come very close to not being able to feed children who arrive at school without a packed lunch or hot meal booking.
If you have any queries about the booking process, please contact the school office who will be happy to help. The easiest way to order meals is to log in once and order a job lot.
Good luck and thank you in advance.
